Cold Connections & Forming In Copper & Brass

    What exactly are Cold Connections?

Cold connections, (mechanical joining techniques), are a way of connecting two or more jewelry objects using a variety of techniques that do not require the use of heat, i.e. soldering. There are many ways of connecting objects in the jewelry studio such as jump rings, rivets, prongs and bezels, tabs with slots, folds, wire wraps and loops to name a few.

Forming in jewelry is the process of shaping metal into desired forms. This can be done using a variety of tools and techniques, including pliers, hammers, and dies.

This doesn’t mean, however, that cold connection jewelry is just an alternative for jewelry artists who don’t want to or can’t use a torch. It’s the organic handmade look and feel of this style that draws jewelry artists in to explore the possibilities. In fact, no heat can mean more design possibilities, because cold connection jewelry allows the joining of materials that cannot be soldered for a variety of reasons.

In addition to learning about cold connections, students will become experienced with the proper use of a variety of tools (hammers, saws, flex shaft, various pliers, anvils, mandrels, shears, files, polishing and finishing, and others) found in every jewelry studio.

Learning how to sew quilts is a great way to practice your sewing skills, and this class has the added benefit of serving members of our community who need a little more warmth and comfort in their lives!  Working as a team, we will design and create quilts to be distributed by another local non-profit agency.  Students will have the opportunity to rotate through multiple workstations so all can experience each of the stages of quilt making.

Participants are encouraged to sign up for multiple sessions!

Students in this class will learn:

    • Basics of how to use the sewing machine
    • How to improve seam allowance accuracy
    • How to prepare and cut fabric for quilt piecing
    • Crazy patch and string piecing techniques
    • How to make and apply bias binding

Some experience with a sewing machine is helpful, but not required. Closed toe shoes are required.

    All material will be provided.

This class will overlap with our adult Charitable Crafting group as a deliberate way to foster community connections.  Adults who are interested in this same content are encouraged to sign up for Charitable Crafting.

Students should be at least 9 years old and need to be attending a Title 1 school in Las Cruces to qualify. Separate enrollments are necessary for each participant.

If younger students wish to participate, they may do so with their adult (dad, mom, grandparents, etc.).  The adult must also complete a separate registration for adult Charitable Crafting on the same day.

These classes are very popular, if you are unable to attend after registering, please inform Sandy so she can open the spot to someone on the waitlist! She can be reached at s.smith@crucescreatives.org

    Guest Program

The Charitable Crafting Project makes textiles for good causes.

In a collaborative effort, participants work hands-on, each participating as they can.  Participants with higher levels of skills in a particular area can guide those with lower skill levels, and we'll make as many garments as we have the time, materials, and labor to make.

This is a free program using donated materials. If you’d like to be involved, you can

    • Help make clothing by sewing or assisting during the charitable crafting sessions
    • Donate fabric or other sewing supplies by dropping them off at Cruces Creatives during business hours. The project can use yarn, fabric pieces of ½ a yard or longer, inner facings and linings, and other sewing supplies and notions.
    • Donate new children's clothing.

    Ages:
18 and older, or 14-17 with a parent or guardian present

    About the facilitator:
Dina Honeycutt has been sewing and practicing other textile crafts for about 45 years, making clothing and toys for friends, family, and charitable projects. She especially enjoys cooperative work for its opportunities to share knowledge and skills.

Come enjoy keenly written folk music with Albertan troubadours Scott Cook and Pamela Mae!

    Event Schedule:

Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at Cruces Creatives

    6:30 p.m.: Doors open

    7:00-9:00 p.m.: Performance, with a roughly 20 minute intermission

Tickets are $20, with a 10% discount for Cruces Creatives members. Thanks to a generous sponsorship from the foundation A Still, Small Voice, all revenues from ticket sales go to support El Calvario's Community and Immigration Advocacy Center, which provides humanitarian, social economic and legal services primarily to underserved populations such as immigrants, focused in Southern New Mexico, while the Gastro Emprende commercial kitchen incubator provides economic development and entrepreneurial opportunities for our neighbors.

    About the Performers:

Albertan troubadour Scott Cook has travelled the world since 2007, releasing seven albums of plainspoken, keenly observant verse along the way. His latest collection, Tangle of Souls, comes packaged in a cloth-bound, 240-page hardcover book of road stories and ruminations, equal parts introspection and insurrection. The album spent two weeks at #1 on Alberta's province-wide community radio network CKUA, and earned Scott his third Canadian Folk Music Award nomination, for English Songwriter of the Year. Its second single, "Say Can You See," was the second most-played song of 2020 on Folk Alliance International's folk radio charts, and took top honors for the folk category in both the 2020 UK Songwriting Competition and the 2020 Great American Song Contest.

Since early 2022 he's been touring steadily around North America with his sweetheart Pamela Mae on upright bass, banjo and vocals, visiting 45 states and 8 provinces while broadcasting solar-powered livestreams from the back of their campervan Roadetta. In 2025 they're releasing a new album called Troubadourly Yours with tours of North America, Europe and Australia to follow. Fresh from the open road, these are sturdy, straight-talking songs that see the good in you.

"Scott Cook’s seventh 'love letter' to the world is all strings and beauty, a 12-song agnostic endorsement of love over fear...  It doesn’t condemn, it summons to one fire...  Of all his records this one simply feels the best. ✭✭✭✭✭" –Fish Griwkowsky, The Edmonton Journal

"Damn, this is a gorgeous album. Scott Cook’s voice –– vocally and lyrically –– is as clear-eyed, optimistic, and straightforward as ever...  Tangle of Souls is the medicine we could all use right now." –Rachel Cholst, Adobe and Teardrops

"He sings his heart and soul, and in doing so lets light flood into your own... He has a good eye for imagery, a gentle human touch, a wry sense of humour, a whole lot of integrity, a warm, rugged voice and a bunch of memorable lines... Truly one of Woody Guthrie's children." –RnR Magazine

Silvopasture is the practice of incorporating trees and shrubs into animal grazing pasture. At Rio Nutrias, the goal is to provide pasture for animals between beneficial tree and shrub lines, create a food forest, and protect the soil from wind and heat. By stacking ecological functions the whole becomes larger than the sum of its parts.

Rio Nutrias Farmstead is located at an elevation of 7,500 ft. in Northern New Mexico. Field Day hosts Lucas and Chelsea Esquibel are working to improve the soil surrounding their immediate homestead by creating a high desert Silvopasture on about 3 acres of degraded cow pasture. So far, they have removed sage brush, installed 5 swales, spread compost and mulch, seeded a fall cover crop, and protected the area from grazing.

At this Field Day we’ll introduce the concept of Silvopasture and its soil health benefits. You will get hands on experience with:

    • Seeding a cover crop with a no-till seed drill;
    • Spreading mulch;
    • Planting windbreak tree seedlings on swales.

The work on the Silvopasture has been done through the New Mexico Department of Agriculture’s Healthy Soil Program (HSP). At the workshop, Chelsea and Lucas will share their story of participating in the HSP and you can meet HSP co-lead Katie Crayton.

Please register though the New Mexico Healthy Soil Program link: https://www.nmhealthysoil.org/portfolio/high-desert-silvopasture-field-day/

At this hands-on field day, participants will learn how to improve water retention and soil health by working with the natural contours of the land. Through demonstration and hands-on practice, we will:
    • Follow the land’s contour to create mulched pathways that slow down and capture water, helping to sustain existing plants and improve soil conditions.
    • Enhance soil remediation by using mulch and organic materials to rebuild healthy, moisture-rich soil.
    • Plant drought-tolerant cacti, such as sotol, along the top of the contour to stabilize the soil and reduce evaporation.
    • Plant evergreen sumac and saltbush at the lower end of the contour, where water naturally collects, providing better growing conditions.
    • Prepare the site for planting pomegranate in the fall, ensuring optimal soil and water retention for long-term growth.
By the end of the day, participants will have hands-on experience with regenerative land management techniques that enhance soil fertility, improve water retention, and support long-term plant health. Afterward, everyone will get to enjoy a free, grant-funded meal.
This field day is part of an ongoing effort to create a more resilient and productive landscape. Future events will build upon this work, ensuring long-term sustainability for the site.

    Location:

    Las Cruces, NM 88001
    Multipurpose Room

    About the Performers:

From Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion and the Kansas City Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium to listening rooms throughout the United States, husband-wife duo GOLDPINE has been offering their own brand of bold harmony-driven Americana to audiences large and small. WINNER of the 2022 Rocky Mountain Songwriter Contest, their distinctive harmonies are clearly a channel for their sometimes-raucous, sometimes-reminiscent compositions. With an incredible collection of stories about life, love, and purpose, their live performance is a powerful projection of everything Goldpine is about: striking vocals, bold harmony, and introspection into the human experience.

After nearly a decade of honing in on their sound, Goldpine released their sophomore album Two and continues to waste no time showing what they stand for. Their lead single, “Do You Have Me,” showcases Kassie’s powerhouse of a voice. Starting out slow, the song cycles through a pattern of harmonious verses and a commanding chorus, ultimately building to an instrumental interlude of southern electric guitars and a rhythmic tambourine.  Two is about real people and real situations, told through candid and passionate songwriting. “I want people to come away from this album and take an honest look at themselves,” Ben remarks. “An honest look at motives. An honest look at connections with other people. An honest look at how we use the time we've been given.” Exposing the pains of severed relationships and unearthing the pursuits of love and purpose, Goldpine is cathartic, moody, dissonant and relevant, all intertwined into one.

    About the Performer:

Sofia Talvik, the Swedish artist whose haunting melodies and crystal-clear voice have captivated audiences across the globe, is returning to the USA for her "Center of the Universe" tour. This tour isn’t just about the music—it’s a journey, an invitation to experience her world through the intimate, personal lens of her songs.

With her 9th album, Center of the Universe, Sofia has taken her music to new heights, blending her Nordic roots with the soul of Americana. The album has been met with critical acclaim, landing on the Top 10 of the Folk Radio Charts. But beyond the accolades, it’s her ability to connect with audiences through deeply personal storytelling that makes her performances unforgettable.

On this tour, Sofia will be traveling through 16 states, bringing her ethereal folk sound to 47 cities. Each concert is a chance to step into her world, where the music feels as intimate as a conversation between old friends. From heartfelt ballads to upbeat Americana rhythms, Sofia’s shows are a celebration of life, love, and the stories that bring us all together.

What sets a Sofia Talvik show apart from the rest? It’s the way she makes each person in the room feel like they’re part of the story. Whether she’s performing at a cozy listening room or on a larger stage, Sofia’s voice and presence create an atmosphere that is nothing short of magical. And it’s not just the music—it’s the connection she builds with her audience, the feeling that you’re experiencing something truly special and personal.

Come for the music, stay for the moment. If you’ve never seen Sofia Talvik live, this is your chance to experience an artist who brings authenticity, emotion, and an unforgettable presence to every stage. For those who have seen her before, you know that her concerts are not just a performance—they’re an experience you’ll want to relive again and again.

Thanks to A Still, Small Voice for partnering with Cruces Creatives to bring this performance to you!
