Beginning Sewing: Tote Bag

Learn beginning sewing skills by constructing a simple tote bag with step-by-step instruction and practice.


Using a tote bag pattern participants will learn the following skills:
  • Prepare fabric for cutting
  • Identify fabric grain-line and it's importance in construction
  • Cut a basic pattern
  • Straight seam construction
  • Press seams open
  • Construct a patch pocket
  • Lining a simple shape
  • Topstitching

Materials List: (please bring with you)

  • 1/2 yarn outer fabric. This should be a heavier weight fabric like a corduroy, lightweight denim, upholstery fabric etc. Woven fabrics are preferable.
  • 3/4 yarn contrasting inner fabric. This can be a lighter-weight woven fabric.
  • A spool of matching thread. 


Requirements:

  • Participants should have completed the Basic Textile Lab Safety Training

  • 14 and up
  • The dress code for the Textile Lab includes closed-toed shoes, long hair should be tied back


Sara Jones is the Textile Lab Team Lead at Cruces Creatives. She has been sewing garments, quilts and toys for over 30 years.
