Please note, this camp is free for students attending a title one school. Title one schools include ALL Las Cruces Public Schools, plus a few charter schools. If you have questions about if your school is included in Title one, see more information at the end of this post.
Over the course of the week, students will make several stuffies, each with a different technique tailored to help them develop their sewing machine skills. We will do some patchwork to practice our seam control, and some applique to get bellies and pet-able spots in place, and then we will learn the ladder stitch to close up after stuffing. Students will finish the week by drafting and sewing a critter of their very own design!
Skills learned in this class include:
How to properly thread the sewing machine
Use of straight, zig zag, and decorative stitches
Use of basting stitches
Sewing seams on a round form
Sewing buttons on
How to catch legs in the seams so they extend correctly once the softie is turned right side out
Clipping curves to remove bulk in seams when turning right side out
Use of the ladder stitch to close stuffed figures
How to stitch an even seam allowance
How to use the seam ripper
All materials will be provided.
Students should be at least 9 years old and need to be attending a Title 1 school in Las Cruces to qualify.
