Students should bring 3-4 long sleeved men’s shirts with them to class. Select shirts that coordinate with each other. I find that my favorite place to start is with a series of shirts that are all in the same color family (like all blue, or all red) but that have different patterns. If someone in your household does not already have something to offer, the thrift shop is a great place to find appropriate shirts.
The length of your skirt will be determined by the sleeve length, which is why we choose the long sleeves.
During class, we will deconstruct the shirts and then use our own waist measurements to sew the skirt.
Students will be most successful in this class if they have had some previous experience with sewing machines. While we will do a review of basic machine operations, we will need most of the time in class to construct our skirts.
Skills developed in this class will include:
Measuring and marking seam allowances
Taking accurate waist measurements.
Safe use of the rotary cutter and ruler
Understanding when to use construction, zig zag, or decorative stitches
Use of a seam ripper
How to finish steeply curved hem edges
Creation of a patch pocket
