Created by Dr. David Johnson and his wife Hui-Chun Su, the Johnson-Su Bioreactor is an ideal method of composting in dry, arid climates as it reduces water usage up to six times compared to other composting methods. Little labor is required after the initial set-up as it is a completely no-turn composting process (no need for a tractor or hours of shoveling!). The compost created in these bioreactors is biologically diverse, fungally dominant and has exceptional potential to regenerate poor and degraded soils by providing microbes that establish symbiotic relationships with plants.
At this Field Day, you will learn how to construct and fill a Johnson-Su Bioreactor. Field Day participation is free-of-charge, but if you would like to build your own bioreactor, we offer an option to purchase a bioreactor kit to take home for just the cost of the materials ($80 for a full-scale bioreactor, $40 for a half-scale bioreactor, $20 for a 2’x2′ bioreactor). You will be able to pay when registering. Make sure to bring a truck or other large vehicle to transport your bioreactor kit if you are interested in this option.
As always, a delicious lunch will be provided!
This field day is being presented in partnership by NM Healthy Soil Working Group and the Seeding Regenerative Agriculture Project.
