Come learn how to grow lavender and other plants in our unique caliche soil!
Join us for a hands-on field day where we will be prepping lavender beds using the trench method! Participants will get practical experience preparing trenches and learning the techniques that make this method successful.
The trenches will already be dug and ready to go. We will be filling them with layers of rock, peat moss, and manure to build healthy, well-draining beds. While planting lavender itself is straightforward for most gardeners, the bed preparation is the key and this method is what makes the difference for success in caliche soils. We will also be mounding the edges of the beds to support flood control and improve water retention.
This will be physically engaging work, so be ready to roll up your sleeves and get active in the soil. After the work is done, enjoy a grant-funded meal on the farm and connect with fellow community members!
By the end of the day, you’ll have the skills to replicate this method for your own lavender beds or gardens and gain hands-on knowledge for growing in New Mexico’s unique soils.
