First Friday Art Ramble Featuring
PJ Shaffer's $#*! Posting Show
Friday April 5 from 5pm-8:30 pm
In the late capitalist age, we are confronted with countless repugnant imagery and subversive subject matter trafficked on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, 4chan, Tumblr etc. Imagery that generates realities, they get lost in the vast depths of the internet lost and forgotten.
My current body of work explores the complicated scopic scenario of this form of debauchery, decadence. With the massive amounts of imagery pumped out all the time, some stories become buried and forgotten. This work appropriates images found online to create a library of source material that I then draw from in these assembling these compositions. By using painting as a predominate vehicle of investigation, I utilize the tactile nature of the material to regenerate the reality of the image/s. The use of alternative methods, techniques and materials establish a titillating field that suddenly pivots to a point of realization and utter repulsion. The work is historic in that it archives events that exist both virtually and viscerally.
