Watercolor: Self-Portrait

Self-portrait allows you to explore your identity with simple water color techniques. The purpose of the class is to understand and paint your own features without the pressure of perfection. You are encouraged to paint yourself as you see yourself, whether it be realistic, stylized or a form of abstraction. The concepts and techniques discussed in the class will be about different drawing styles, glazing with watercolor and basic understanding of the color wheel.  There are no pre-requisites required for this class.

Cost: $30 

Ages: 18 and older, or 15-17 with a parent or guardian present

When: Saturday August 11th from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Materials: Participants are asked to bring the following:

  • Watercolor paper
  • 1 medium, 1 small brush
  • Watercolor paints; Yellow ochre, vermillion or carmine red, colbalt or ultramarine blue-participants may bring any variation of yellow, red, and blue if they so desire.
  • A portrait photo, (self-portrait is suggested)
  • Masking tape, or blue painter's tape and board if using loose sheets.
  • Mixing tray
  • 2 cups
  • Rags or paper towel
  • Pencils
About the Instructor: Raquel Madrigal is a senior in the BFA-Studio Art program at NMSU. She has been a Teachers Assistant for two years at NMSU sculpture Intro Class.  She has been formally trained in drawing, painting, and in color.  She has done extensive work on glazing techniques with watercolor and how it relates to self-portraits.
