Software for 3D modeling is often aimed at animators or engineers, and it can be hard to learn. SketchUp was originally designed for fast architectural modeling with client interaction, so it's simple and intuitive to use. As a web application hosted by Trimble, you can access the program, and your library of models, from any connected computer. In this workshop, you will learn how to access the application, navigate in a 3D environment, and create models using the basic tools. You will also be introduced to the SketchUp 3D Warehouse, which is the largest repository of free 3D models in the world. For continuing learning, there will be a companion website with further links and tutorials.

Additional Information

Cost: $10

What to Bring:
A laptop with SketchUp previously installed (visit https://www.sketchup.com/download), a wheel mouse, and a computer power supply.

Ages:
16 and older

Prerequisites:
No previous experience in 3D design is required, but participants should be proficient in the use of their computers, including use of web browsers, navigating tabs, familiarity with ‘wheel’ mouse, and email. Participants should have a working email address, and should be able to access their email during the class, unless they have previously registered with Trimble and created an account. Ideally, participants should register with Trimble online before coming to the workshop.

To make sure that your computer and web browser are compatible with SketchUp, install and run SketchUp before the workshop. SketchUp is available for free download at https://www.sketchup.com/download.

About the Instructor:
Daniel Kim has used SketchUp for over ten years, creating models to plan home improvement and woodworking projects. Professionally, he has used the software to model machines designed and built by the NMSU Engineering College, and for valves and actuators in a company web catalog. He has taught how to use it at NMSU in a lab section, and in short Community Education courses at DACC.
