Realism with Colored Pencil

Through demonstration and follow-along practice, you’ll use colored pencils to create a realistic still-life of an apple while learning foundational drawing principles and basic colored pencil techniques including sight-measuring proportions, identifying color, layering, creating depth, burnishing, and unifying a composition.

Additional Information

Cost: $25, plus material costs (participants bring supplies)

What to bring:

  • White Bristol paper (any WHITE smooth/minimally-toothed paper, decent thickness)
  • 50-count Crayola colored pencils
  • Erasers, stick and rubber
  • Pencil
  • Painter’s tape

Ages: Adults, 16 and older with a parent or guardian present.

Pre-requisites: No previous experience is necessary, but basic drawing skills will be helpful.

About the Instructor

Valerie Devereaux holds a BFA in studio art from NMSU (2017), and her arts awards include Best in Show for the NMSU Juried Student Show, Honorable Mention in the NM Women in the Arts Scholarship, the Jesus & Josefina Mata Award, and the Karl & Sylvia Schueppert Scholarship. She has been working with colored pencils for 6 years.
