Songwriting 101: Introduction to Songwriting

Do you want to write your first song or find new ways to grow as a songwriter? This is the course for you! Through four weeks of demonstration, discussion, and practice, you’ll

  • Learn how to use music you love as a launchpad for your own songwriting
  • Learn how to write melodies that match existing lyrics, and vice-versa
  • Learn and practice general principles for writing powerful lyrics
  • Learn and practice general principles for writing melodies that engage your listeners
  • Develop simple and effective techniques for giving and receiving constructive feedback

No previous musical or songwriting experience is required.

Course Overview

(This is a general outline that can change to meet the wants and needs of class members.)

Lesson 1 (April 6):

  • Drawing inspiration from music you love
  • Matching lyrics to melodies, and vice-versa

Lesson 2 (April 13): 

  • Heuristics for writing powerful lyrics 
  • Approaches for finding and developing lyrical ideas

Lesson 3 (April 20):

  • Heuristics for writing engaging melodies
  • Approaches for finding and developing melodic ideas

Lesson 4 (April 27):

  • Approaches for constructive feedback
  • Song sharing and celebration (optional)

Additional Information

Ages: 14 and older, or 10 and up with a parent or guardian present and enrolled in the class

What to bring: Musical instruments are welcome but not required. A keyboard and a classical guitar are available at the makerspace.

About the Instructor

Pat DeSimio is an award-winning Las Cruces songwriter who specializes in traditional-sounding folk, Celtic, bluegrass, and Americana music. His songs have been adopted by religious groups and covered by performers around the country, including Steve Makofka and the Turtle Chasers, Hana Zara, and chart-topping roots songwriter Darryl Purpose. Pat holds a master’s degree in rhetoric and professional communication with an emphasis in composition (i.e., writing processes).
