Songwriting Workshop: Writing Catchy Melodies and Lyrics to Match Them

Learn and practice a comprehensive strategy for writing catchy melodies and matching them to lyrical ideas. Through demonstration followed by group and individual practice with instructor support, you’ll develop new options for writing songs and leave with the start of a melody, ideas for lyrics, and options for overall song structure—or more.

No previous experience with songwriting or musicianship is required.

What to bring

  • An audio recording device (a phone app will work fine)
  • OPTIONAL: An instrument, especially one you can’t play very well. A keyboard is available.
  • OPTIONAL: Topics you’ve wanted to write a song about

Ages: 18 and older, or 12-17 with a parent or guardian present

Cost: Free to members, $10 for the general public

Payment is due at registration (online registration requires payment within 15 minutes in order to reserve space in the class). Cancellations are only available until 48 hours before class. Refunds are only available if class is properly cancelled. 

About the Instructor:

Pat DeSimio is an award-winning Las Cruces songwriter who specializes in traditional-sounding folk, Celtic, and bluegrass music. His songs have been adopted by religious groups throughout the country and covered by artists including Darryl Purpose, Steve Makofka and the Turtle Chasers, Hana Zara, and more. He holds an M.A. in rhetoric and professional communication from NMSU, with an emphasis in composition (i.e., writing processes).
