Nikola Tesla: Electrical Engineer, Inventor & Visionary

Learn about Nikola Tesla, his life, and inventions, and contributions to electrification of the world. Tesla is best known for developing the AC induction motor and the Tesla coil.

Through lecture and demonstrations of Tesla's inventions, we will explore:

  • life events that contributed to Tesla’s inventive genius;
  • his formal education, and his education in the American way of business;
  • his employment with Thomas Alva Edison and their subsequent War of the Currents;
  • his collaboration with George Westinghouse to develop efficient power generation, distribution, and motors;
  • how the AC induction motor works and review the scientific principles that Tesla understood;
  • the Tesla Coil: why he invented it, how he used it, how it works, and view a demonstration of a “little Tesla Coil”
  • his contributions to the development of radio in his quest to provide world-wide communication system and power.

About the Instructor

Gilbert Gil recently retired from the Center for Countermeasures at White Sands Missile Range, where he worked as an electronics engineer in the areas of electronic warfare, and providing environments for testing sensor systems. He also worked for Hughes Aircraft Company in the development of microwave circuits.

He has a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles, and an emphasis in applied electromagnetics. He has a bachelor’s degree from NMSU in electrical engineering.
