    Tote Bag Pattern

    By Sara Jones

    Cruces Creatives

This pattern is provided for anyone who wishes to use it to support the Charitable Crafting Group in their Christmas project for Jardin de los Ninos.

The group is working to provide 50 children with a tote bag filled with a pair of pajamas, a book and a toy. The dimensions of this pattern are a suggestion only; if you have a preferred tote bag pattern please feel free to use that instead.

This pattern uses approximately 1/2 yard of outer fabric and 3/4 yard of inner fabric. Suggested fabrics for the outer layer are any mid-weight fabric which can provide body to the bag: denims, corduroy, lightweight canvas or decorator fabrics. Lining and handle fabrics can be lighter weight sewing or quilting fabrics.

    1. Cut 2 rectangles of both inner and outer fabrics 15" by 32" for the body. Cut 2 rectangles 6" x 18" of the inner fabric for the handles. Cut 1 rectangle of inner fabric 6" x 12" for pocket (optional).

    2. Seam allowances are 1/2" unless stated otherwise.

Fold body pieces in half with right sides together and sew along the long sides of the body pieces. Press seams open.

    3. Press a crease along the bottom. Pull out the bag sides to create a triangle shape and use a pin to match the seam to the crease. Line up a ruler along the seam and draw a vertical line 4" deep. Sew on the line. Repeat for each bottom corner of the bag.

    4. Now is the time to add any embellishments to the bag. Rick-rack, lace and other trims, appliques or any other design elements should be applied before the rest of the bag is assembled.

    5. Optional pocket. Either exterior or interior patch pockets can be used. Fold the 6" x 12" piece of fabric in half with right sides facing. Sew along each long side of pocket. Turn pocket right side out and press. Decide on placement of the pocket.

    6. Flip the pocket over along the raw edge and sew the bottom of the pocket to the body. Flip the pocket piece back up into place and top-sew along all three edges using a 1/4" seam.

    7. Fold the handles in half along the long edges, wrong sides together, and press a crease. Open out the handle with the wrong side facing up. Fold in the long edges to meet at the crease and press. Top-sew each strap along each long edge using a 1/4" seam.

    8. Decide on placement of the handles and line up the raw edges. Pin in place.

    9. Turn inner lining inside out and insert body and handles into lining piece so that right sides are together. Line up the seam lines and pin. Sew top seam leaving at least a 3" opening for turning. Reaching through the opening, pull the bag and lining right sides out. Press top edges and top-sew a 1/4" seam completely around the top of the bag.
